To the tragic deaths of some incredible people

Recently some of my favorite and inspiring ‘celebrities’ passed away for one reason or another.

First George Carlin, a pinnacle comedian of his life time and to this day.  I did get to see him live back in Melbourne.  Still extremely funny and innovative.  You couldn’t have asked for someone so smart and engaging.  Kevin Smith said it best in his blog post.

Bernie Mac, another hilarious comedian, and super nice guy.  From everything I read about him online, from people meeting him, they only said good things.  He was a hard working man, and deserved all the fame and success he had.

LeRoi Moore saxaphonist from the Dave Matthews Band.  Another super nice guy that deserved everything he had.  One with extreme talent, and the heart of gold.  Mandy and I donated to some of his favorite charities in Virginia.  We’ll be very sad when we see the Maddison Square Garden Show Stand Up for a Cure, it won’t be the same, but we’ll have a great time for the man above!

Orlando Doggy Day Care

Over the past two months, Mandy has taken the dogs to Happy Paws Orlando for doggy day care.  I finally got the chance to visit this past Monday, and the amenities are awesome!  The dogs absolutely love it!

We’ve really taken advantage of it, even if we just leave the dogs for the day.  Hannah gets to swim, Marle gets to play with other dogs, and they come home exhausted!  It’s really worth it and I’m glad I finally got the chance to see the place myself!.  The owners Michael and Corrina are super nice and have done a phenomenal job with every detail.  I’ve spoken extensively to the owners and they have done 5 years of research traveling around the country visiting Pet Resorts and talking to pet owners of what they liked and did not like about the pet resorts they were going to.  They have really done their homework.  It shows in the quality of everything they do, between limiting the number of dogs, and cats (because too many becomes unsafe for everyone), and being able to have a web cam to watch your dog from the web.  It’s incredible the amount of effort to detail and service.  I highly recommend this place to anyone with a pet.  It’s good exercise and the grooming service they do is worth it.  Best of all the price is very reasonable!!

Souvenir Travel Traditions you can incorporate

beautiful-day-at-the-bay.jpg  When traveling everyone has their little souvenir tradition.  I’d like to share mine and hear some other people’s.

The first and most common thing is buying a magnet.  This is easy and they are very common.  I usually try to find unique magnets, for example ones where you can put a picture of yourself from that same trip. When I buy a magnet my requirement is it must be a very memorable place, so I don’t go magnet crazy.

The next thing I like to do is buy a shirt from a restaurant I really enjoyed.  This is pretty easy, but my requirement here is the food and service must be good, and the shirt needs to be really unique.

Buying a Calendar for the next year, this has been a recent addition to my souvenirs tradition.  This requirement is the pictures from the calendar are of beautiful scenery that I have seen or want to go back and visit.

My last but favorite travel tradition is buying a small picture of some beautiful scenery or something famous. For example I bought a small 6″ X 8″ picture of Hanauma Bay in Hawaii when I went last year.  This year I bought a fantastic picture of the Sydney Opera House lit up.  I’ll frame these and start a mural of these beautiful places.  I did not find something comparable from my Germany trip or from being in Perth.  This requirement is, it must be a place I have visited and really enjoyed.

Top 10 things I learned about living in Australia

10. As an American it’s expensive here.  For example, a BLT Sandwich averages around $10-$13. Tipping is not expected, and servers make between $18-$25 an hour.

9.  Driving on the opposite side of the road doesn’t take long to get used to about a week.  It takes 2 weeks to get used to the area and drive on the opposite side of the road.  Everyone drives slow and relaxed just like…

8. ….No Worries, really means something to Australians.  They care about spending lots of time with their friends and families.

7.  People are extremely friendly, but they’re usually thrown off by American accents, so add a little twang to your vernacular.

6.  Internet here is expensive and slow.  There are no unlimited services.

5.  The food is very good when you find the right place.  Bookings aka Reservations are essential…I say essential because if you show up randomly they look at you funny. My favorite meal is kangaroo steak.

4.  People love the outdoors, bush walks, and camping are huge activities!

3.  Drinking local wine is extremely popular and their wine selection is incredible!

2.  Movies don’t come out here like in the States, they’re anywhere from a week behind to 3 months behind (obviously depends on the movie, ie. The Dark Knight…Heath Ledger…)
